Made a mistake on a filed return? We'll correct it.

If something changes after your return is filed, such as a late tax form, a missed deduction or the wrong filing status, we prepare and file an amended return so your record with the IRS is correct.

Form 1040-XAmended state returns

When you should amend

An amended return corrects a return you've already filed. It's the right tool whenever the income, deductions, credits or filing status you reported were wrong. Common reasons include:

Correcting under-reported income

A corrected W-2 or a 1099 that arrived after you filed.

Adding a dependent

Claiming a child or relative you left off, and the credits that come with them.

Claiming missed expenses

Deductions or credits you qualified for but didn't claim, such as education credits.

Removing an expense

Taking out a deduction that turned out not to be allowed, before the IRS finds it.

Changing filing status

Switching from separate to joint, or from single to head of household when eligible.

Residency corrections

Fixing a return filed as the wrong resident or non-resident status.

You don't need to amend for simple math errors or a missing schedule. The IRS usually corrects those itself or writes to ask for the missing form.

What's included

  • Review of your original return and the change that's needed
  • Preparation of Form 1040-X with a clear explanation of each change
  • Amended state returns, since a federal change usually affects your state return too
  • Electronic filing where the IRS and your state allow it
  • Tracking the amended return until it's processed
  • Help paying any additional tax to limit interest and penalties

How it works

  1. Send us the original return along with the new or corrected documents.
  2. We calculate the change. You'll see whether you're owed a refund or owe additional tax before anything is filed.
  3. E-sign and file. We file the federal and state amendments.
  4. Follow-up. Amended returns take longer to process than original returns. We track the status and respond if the IRS has questions.

Frequently asked questions

How far back can I amend a return?

To claim a refund, you generally must file within three years of the date you filed the original return, or within two years of the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you owe more tax, you should amend as soon as you find the error to limit interest.

Can an amended return be e-filed?

Yes, for recent tax years the IRS accepts Form 1040-X electronically. Older years, and some states, still require a paper filing. We'll use the fastest option available.

Will amending my return trigger an audit?

Amending doesn't by itself trigger an audit. Correcting a mistake yourself is usually far better than having the IRS find it, which can lead to penalties.

You didn't prepare my original return. Can you still amend it?

Yes. We regularly amend returns prepared by other firms or with tax software.
