Lower your taxes before the year ends, not after.

By April, most of your tax bill is already decided. Planning means making the right moves before the year ends, so every deduction, credit and exclusion you can use is working for you next April.

What tax planning means

Tax planning means organizing your money within the law so you pay less tax. We start by looking closely at your income, savings and plans, then use the rules that work in your favor. Every idea we suggest is fully compliant, we bring ideas to you without waiting to be asked, and our advice follows the tax rules as they stand today.

Strategies we review with you

Retirement contributions

Using 401(k), IRA, SEP and Solo 401(k) accounts to reduce taxable income, and deciding between pre-tax and Roth.

Health savings

Maximizing HSA and FSA contributions, which can reduce tax on money you'd spend on healthcare anyway.

Timing income & deductions

Choosing which year to receive bonuses, sell investments or make large deductible payments.

Investment taxes

Harvesting capital losses, holding periods, and handling RSUs, ESPPs and stock options.

Business structure

Whether a sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corp or C-corp gives the best after-tax result as your business grows.

Family & education

Child and dependent credits, education credits and 529 plans.

What's included

  • A review of last year's return to find missed opportunities
  • A projection of this year's tax, with and without recommended changes
  • A written plan with specific actions and deadlines
  • Withholding (W-4) and estimated tax payment adjustments to avoid surprises
  • A mid-year or year-end check-in to adjust the plan as your situation changes

How it works

  1. Planning session. We discuss your income, goals and upcoming changes such as a new job, home, child or business.
  2. Projection. We estimate this year's tax and model the strategies that apply to you.
  3. Your plan. You receive clear recommendations, ranked by how much they save.
  4. Follow-through. We check in before year-end, when most strategies must be in place.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to plan?

As early in the year as possible, and no later than the fall. Most strategies, such as retirement contributions through payroll or the timing of a sale, must be done before December 31.

Is tax planning only for high earners?

No. Choosing the right filing status, adjusting withholding and claiming credits you qualify for can make a meaningful difference at any income level.

Is tax planning the same as tax avoidance?

Tax planning uses the rules the tax law provides, such as deductions, credits and tax-advantaged accounts. We never recommend aggressive schemes that put you at risk with the IRS.
